The Indian Premier League, popularly known as IPL, was first inaugurated in 2008. It is a professional T20 Cricket League with a round-robin and knockout format. The participating teams represent major Indian cities. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have been the standout performers. Both teams have registered their names in the IPL Winners List numerous times.

Cricket has a massive fanbase in India, as it is celebrated like a religion. IPL, too, became popular ever since it was established. 200 million Indians watched the first edition of 2008 on TV and 10 million overseas viewers, overtaking the record 150 million viewers that had previously tuned into football’s English Premier League. The Indian Premier League became the world’s sixth-biggest sports league within two seasons.

Mumbai Indians have won the title the maximum number of times, i.e. 5. Chennai Super Kings are second on the list, having won the title 4 times in IPL history. KKR has won the title 2 times.

History of the IPL Winners

Let’s take a look at the journey of the IPL winners throughout the years. As many as seven different teams have been able to win the IPL title.

2008 IPL Winner: Rajasthan Royals

The 2008 IPL was the first season of the Indian Premier League. A lot of big cricketers were involved in several teams. Rajasthan Royals lifted the IPL Trophy and became the 2008 IPL winners. Under the leadership of legendary Shane Warne, a young team mostly made of uncapped Indian players was absolutely brilliant and showed great discipline to become the first IPL winners. Warne was both the coach and the captain of the Rajasthan Royals.

The final match was played between Chennai Super Kings & Rajasthan Royals at DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai. The Royals were chasing CSK’s target of 163/5 in 20 overs and won the match by 3 wickets. Yusuf Pathan was named the Man of the Match. He took 3 wickets and scored 56 runs in 39 balls, helping his team become the 2008 IPL winners and register their name in the IPL winners list.

Shane Warne of Rajasthan Royals was awarded the man of the tournament for his outstanding all-round performance. Shawn Marsh received the orange cap as the highest run-scorer, and Sohil Tanvir from Rajasthan Royals was the purple cap holder as the highest wicket-taker.

The second edition of the Indian Premier League was held in South Africa because it coincided with elections in India. This year Deccan Chargers, led by the legendary Adam Gilchrist, became winners and placed their name on the IPL Winners list. This was a huge surprise for everyone as Deccan Chargers finished last in IPL 2008.

Deccan Chargers defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final by 6 runs. DC scored 143/6 in 20 overs, while RCB could only manage to score 139/9. Herschelle Gibbs was the top scorer with 53* in 48 balls.

Matthew Hayden of Chennai Super Kings scored the most runs in the tournament, while R.P. Singh of DC took the most wickets. Adam Gilchrist was named the player of the series.

2010 IPL Winners: Chennai Super Kings

After hosting the second edition in South Africa, IPL 2010 was held again in India. This year Chennai Super Kings won the IPL Trophy and became the third team with their names on the IPL winners list. MS Dhoni finally led his team to victory after missing it in the first edition. CSK were the strong contender from the start of the tournament, with the likes of Suresh Raina, Matthew Hayden, Albie Morkel, Muralitharan, and MSD in their squad.

CSK faced Sachin Tendulkar-led Mumbai Indians in the finals. Batting first, CSK set a target of 169 for MI. MI could only score 146-9 in 20 overs and fell short by 23 runs. Suresh Raina scored 57* in 35 balls and was awarded man of the match. The legendary Sachin Tendulkar received the Man of the Tournament as well as the Orange Cap Award. He became the first Indian to win Orange Cap. Pragyan Ojha was the purple cap holder.

IPL Winners 2011: Chennai Super Kings

IPL 2011 Winners: CSK

Chennai Super Kings became the first team to win back-to-back IPL trophies in history after becoming the IPL 2011 winners. CSK defended their title against the heavy batting unit of RCB. CSK, with the help of Murali Vijay’s 95 and Mike Hussey’s 63, scored 205-5 in 20 overs. RCB’s batting failed miserably, and they could only manage to score 147-8 in 20 overs.

Murali Vijay was named Man of the Match, whereas Chris Gayle received the Man of the Tournament trophy. Lasith Malinga of Mumbai Indians was the Purple Cap Holder.

2012 IPL Winners: Kolkata Knight Riders

KKR 2012 IPL Winners

KKR became the fourth team to win the IPL title when they won the fifth edition of the tournament. KKR became the fourth team to register its name in the IPL Winners List. Gautam Gambhir-led squad clinched a nail-biting encounter against Chennai Super Kings in the final to lay their hands on the trophy for the first time. Batting first, Chennai Super Kings scored 190/3 in 20 overs. KKR, in response, won the match with 2 balls to spare thanks to Manvinder Bisla’s 89 runs of 48 balls. He was later named the Man of the Match.

Sunil Narine received the Player of the Tournament trophy. Chris Gayle from RCB was the Orange Cap Winner, while Morne Morkel of Delhi Daredevils was the Purple Cap Winner.

2013 IPL Winner: Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians became the IPL winners for the first time in 2013. Rohit Sharma brought home the first cup for the Mumbai Indians in 2013, defeating Chennai Super Kings in the final by 23 runs. Mumbai scored 148/9 with the help of Kieron Pollard’s 60* (32). Chennai fell short by 23 runs despite MSD’s 63* off 45 balls.

Mike Hussey received the Orange Cap, whereas Dwayne Bravo received the Purple Cap. Bravo broke the record of Lasith Malinga’s 28 wickets by picking up 32 wickets in the season. Both the players were from Chennai Super Kings. Shane Watson of Rajasthan Royals was awarded the Player of the Tournament.

2014 IPL Winner: Kolkata Knight Riders

IPL 2014 Winners

Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL title again and became the 2014 IPL Winner. They became only the second team to do so. Led by Gautam Gambhir, the Knight Riders relied on their strong bowling attack, including the likes of Sunil Narine and Morne Morkel, to secure the title.

Kolkata faced Kings XI Punjab in the final, where they won the toss and elected to bowl first. Kings XI Punjab lost early wickets, but with the help of Wriddhiman Saha’s maiden IPL century, they were able to post a target of 200 for the Knight Riders. Kolkata chased down the total in the last over. Manish Pandey was the top scorer for KKR with 94 runs off 50 balls. Pandey was named Man of the Match for his amazing performance. Glenn Maxwell was named the Player of the Season.

2015 IPL Winners: Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians became the IPL winners for the second time in 2015. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the Mumbai Indians displayed consistent performances throughout the tournament. They finished the group stage in second place, winning nine out of their 14 matches. Their well-balanced team boasted a strong batting lineup, with the likes of Lendl Simmons, Ambati Rayudu, and Rohit Sharma himself contributing crucial runs.

Mumbai won the finals against Chennai Super Kings by 41 runs. Batting first they posted a total of 202 runs for Chennai to win that title.

2023 IPL Winners: Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings has once again won the IPL after reaching the playoffs 12th time in IPL history. This is Chennai’s fifth IPL title, equivalent to Mumbai’s record of five IPL titles. Chennai finished second on the IPL Points Table 2023 and faced Gujarat Titans in the Qualifier 1. Chennai defeated Gujarat by 15 runs and advanced to the finals.

Rain interrupted play on the scheduled day, leading to the final match being moved to the reserved day. Chennai defeated Gujarat by 5 wickets to clinch their fifth IPL title.

2024 IPL Winners: Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders: IPL 2024 winners

Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL 2024 after defeating the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the finals by 8 wickets. KKR has won their third IPL title, putting them third on the list of teams with the most IPL trophies, after Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.
